SUSTAINABILITY

Groundwork: Why It Matters

Sustainability is about more than protecting the environment—it’s about building a healthier, more resilient town for the future. When I first ran for Mayor, I promised to work with Council to strengthen Mountain View’s sustainability practices. Together, we’ve made meaningful progress, and I believe this is only the beginning.

Promises Made, Promises Kept

Over the last four years, we’ve taken concrete steps toward a more sustainable Mountain View:

  • Composting: We introduced an opt-in composting program, conveniently billed with other utilities, making it easy for residents to participate.
  • Recycling Education: We provided outreach and resources to help residents recycle correctly, resulting in a dramatic improvement in recycling rates.
  • Clear Signage: New labels on trash and recycling bins help reduce mistakes and keep recycling streams clean.
  • Friendly Guidance: A “friendly notice” system helps residents correct errors and learn more about what can and cannot be recycled.
  • Pollinator Support: We began small but important steps to help native bee populations—like allowing sunflowers, which provide food and habitat.
  • Tree Planting: We planted trees that serve both our infrastructure and our environment—improving property values, cooling our streets, and strengthening Mountain View’s natural beauty.

Looking Ahead

There’s still so much more we can do. If re-elected, I will:

  • Explore new opportunities to support urban farming and pollinator-friendly landscaping.
  • Expand educational programs to help residents make sustainable choices.
  • Continue strengthening composting and recycling efforts, ensuring these programs remain accessible and effective.
  • Look for creative partnerships and grant opportunities that help Mountain View stay a leader in small-town sustainability.
  • Grow Our Urban Canopy: Endorse Council’s efforts to replace aging trees with new plantings that cool our streets, improve air quality, and beautify our town.

If sustainability excites you as much as it excites me, I’d love to hear your ideas!

Gratitude for Our Green Champions

I’m grateful to the residents and Council Members who’ve helped advocate for and embrace composting, tree-planting, and improved recycling habits. I appreciate it those who have shared their passion for sustainability. Every small step adds up to a healthier community and a brighter future. Together, we’ve proven that even a small town can make a big difference.
